Bertrams employee walks 72 miles to raise funds for Community Week

Tuesday 19th June 2012

Mark Silver, employee of Bertram Library Services is taking part in Smiths News’ Community Week by walking 72 miles along the Kirklees Way in five days, starting on 23 June.

The Kirklees Way is a long circular walking route around Kirklees; an area, which stretches from the high moorlands of the Pennines (including part of the Peak National Park) around Marsden and Holmfirth in the west to the edge of Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield in the east.

Mark, Library Promotions and Design Manager at Bertram Library Services, hopes to raise £1000 for The National Literacy Trust. This is a fantastic amount, which will be added to the Company’s Community Week fundraising target of £70,000. Community Week is an annual fundraising drive organised by Smiths News PLC, the parent company of Bertram Library Services. Staff across the business are organising charity events in and outside work to raise money for their favourite charity.

Mark, 35, who decided to do something a bit more ambitious this year says:

“In less than five days I will be trying to achieve the toughest challenge I’ve ever set myself. I love walking and this year’s Community Week has given me the perfect opportunity to complete the walk, get fit and also help a deserving cause - the National Literacy Trust.”

“I chose the National Literacy Trust, as my nominated charity as it’s important to me to help a cause that supports the industry I work in. At Bertram Library Services, we sell books to libraries across the country and overseas. And I believe that literacy is such an important factor in everyone's life, as it’s such a determining factor in how we make a living, interact with people and learn skills such as writing and reading for our day-to-day lives.”

Mark will begin the walk at 12pm on 23 June. The route will take Mark through quaint villages; moor land, woodland and past many historical sites. He will finish the trek on Wednesday 27 June. If anyone would like to sponsor Mark they can donate via
