Employees walk 26 miles along The Ridgeway to raise money for Sense

Thursday 28th June 2012

Eighteen employees from Smiths News PLC will set off on Saturday 30 June to take part in a sponsored 26 mile trek along The Ridgeway in Oxfordshire to raise cash for Sense; a charity that supports children and adults who are deaf and blind.

The 12-hour sponsored walk, which will start at midnight on 30 June is part of the company’s employee-led Community Week fundraising initiative, which aims to raise £70,000 this year for communities and charities.

Staff who are taking part in the walk will be completing it in teams. Two of the teams are made up from staff who are based at the Company’s depots in Borehamwood and Nottingham. And the other team has been formed by staff from the Company’s head office in Swindon. Each team is required to raise at least £1,750 in sponsorship money.

Debbie Nicholas, Executive Assistant at the Company’s head office, who will be donning her boots to tackle the walk said:

“We’re looking forward to the challenging 26 mile walk. Last weekend we walked 16 miles, which included the hill up to Barbury Castle, so we know exactly what’s in store for us as we head towards the finish line. We’ve been busy, both training and fundraising. The time and effort the team has put in shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s been very rewarding and fun at the same time!”

In addition to gaining sponsorship money, the teams are organising fundraising events, including bowling nights, bingo and car boot sales to raise money towards their target. Recently, the head office team held a cream tea event, where they raised over £860 for the charity. “We are absolutely delighted that so far we have raised over £2,200 in total. Everyone has been so generous and gone to enormous lengths to support us.” added Debbie.

Staff from Smiths News PLC as well as family and friends will be waiting at the finishing line at Banbury Castle on Sunday 1 July to congratulate them on their achievement.

Mark Cashmore, Group Chief Executive of Smiths News PLC said:

“I have been amazed by the effort the staff have been putting in to train for this walk. The amount of hard work to raise money for our Community Week has been incredible. It is a testament to our staff to see such enthusiasm in the company for supporting local charities and community groups. I wish them the very best of luck and we will be cheering them on.”
