Open day at Smiths News Brislington depot is a success

Wednesday 7th March 2012

Smiths News and the NFRN held a joint open day at the Brislington depot on Tuesday 28 February.

Independent retailers from Bristol, Swindon, Taunton and Yeovil visited the depot and met with staff and key suppliers. The day proved to be a useful insight for the retailers, as the visitors were given a tour around the depot and the feedback received was very positive.

A number of key suppliers exhibited at the open day and discussed business opportunities with the retailers, giving them advice on how they can make their businesses grow. The retailers also got to see all aspects of the warehouse operations, including packing and scanning in the returns.

John Whitton, Bristol Group Manager said:

“The Bristol team is always keen to work with the NFRN and its partners. This year we had a number of great stands from Toshiba, Bookers, Premier Security through to Marketforce and local publisher Bristol Evening Press. It was a pleasure to be able to welcome our retail customers to the Brislington depot and we are pleased that those who attended found their visit informative and beneficial.”

Independent retailer, Angela Smith who owns Alexandra News in Clevedon commented on the day:

“This is the second open day I’ve attended at Brislington and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Having worked with Smiths News for a number of years now, I’ve got a great relationship with all their staff. From customer services to our wonderful delivery driver – they are always willing to help and ensure any issues we might have are resolved quickly and efficiently. Days like today are a great opportunity to meet people face-to-face and say thank you for all their hard work.’’

At the end of the open day, Derek Cook, Western District President of the NFRN said: “I would encourage all newsagents to attend open days such as this. The day was not only well organised, but an extremely worthwhile opportunity for retailers to meet people within the industry face-to face.’’

A total of £81 was donated by staff and visitors and the money raised will be split between the depot’s three chosen charities; Brislington Cancer Research, Cots for Tots and the Donkey Sanctuary. Eight retailers also won a prize from the open day’s free prize draw.
