Our Community Week returns in 2012

Tuesday 13th March 2012

Smiths News PLC is delighted to announce that the company will be holding its fundraising event, Community Week, for the second year running.

Community Week will take place during the week starting 25 June 2012. Smiths News PLC aims to smash last year’s fundraising total of £72,000 by getting staff involved in fundraising events for charities across England and Wales.

The Company has organised two fundraising flagship events for staff. A bike ride from Smiths News’ Southampton depot to its Newcastle depot will start on Sunday 24 June and finish on Friday 29 June. And the other flagship fundraising event planned is a challenging 26 mile walk across The Ridgeway, the most scenic part of the route in Oxfordshire and will start at 12 midnight on Saturday 30th June, finishing on Sunday 1 July.

The Company is delighted that around 18 members of staff are taking part in the bike ride. Each cyclist is required to raise at least £2,000 in sponsorship for the charity of their choice. Staff are raising money for several charities including Marie Curie, the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, RSPCA, and NewstrAid, the industry’s own charity which supports retailers and their families when they fall on hard times.

Four courageous teams will be taking part in the Ridgeway Walk. Each team has four members of staff and includes a team from Bertrams, the book wholesaler based in Norwich. There will be a team from Smiths News’ Borehamwood and Nottingham depots as well as a team from the PLC’s head office in Swindon. The Ridgeway teams will be donning their walking boots for the 12 hour, 26 mile trek, to raise £1,750 per team for Sense, a charity which supports children and adults who are deaf and blind.

Mark Cashmore, Group Chief Executive of Smiths News PLC said:

“Last year's Community Week was a great success. Right across the business we had individuals and teams getting involved and raising money for national and local charities. So this year we’re planning to do it all again, only bigger and better by offering two flagship fundraising events for staff. Our target is to beat the amount raised last year, but it’s not all about fundraising, what’s most important is staff taking part, having fun and helping the causes that are important to them.”
