Smiths News PLC raises over £100,000 for charities

Wednesday 8th August 2012

Smiths News PLC is delighted to announce that the Company has raised an amazing £102,359 for local and national charities as part of their Community Week initiative.

It’s the second year running where Smiths News PLC employees have smashed their Community fundraising target.

In January, when the Community Week initiative launched, a target of £70,000 was set. Since then staff have been working hard to raise money for both local and national charities. Mark Cashmore, Group Chief Executive said:

“Raising this amount of money (and we are still counting) is an outstanding achievement and it is a credit to everyone who took part in fundraising and/or sponsoring colleagues. We have been able to support over 15 different charities this year by the sheer amount of hard work our employees have done to raise money for their great causes.”

As part of the initiative, the Company held a Community Week in June for staff to take part in lots of fundraising activities. During the week, 32 employees took part in the Company’s flagship fundraising events; a 375-mile bike ride from Southampton to Newcastle and a challenging 26-mile walk along part of the Ridgeway to raise money for the charities they support.

Employee Brett Hanley, IT Support Team Leader, who took part in the bike ride said: “The S to N bike ride was an amazing experience and with the support of my friends, family and colleagues I’ve raised £1,090 for my nominated charity, the Swindon Downs Syndrome Group.”

On receiving Brett’s cheque for the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group, Jo Messenger, Secretary for the charity said:

“I would like to congratulate the Smiths News PLC employees for their amazing achievement in the amount of money which has been raised for charities. I would like to say a huge thank you to Brett Hanley for his hard work and fantastic achievement in raising over £1000 for the group. We are thrilled with the money he has raised for our speech and language therapy group, this means so much to us. We have to raise £17,000 a year to ensure the speech & language group continues each year. The whole Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group would like to thank Brett for his fundraising it has really helped ensure another year for speech.”

To celebrate the total raised for this year’s Community Week and the hard work put in by staff, the Company is organising a celebratory awards presentation in September. Employees have been invited to nominate colleagues for an award, which range from Community Team Event of the Year to the Outstanding Individual Contribution Award. The awards event will be hosted by Olympic swimmer Michael Jamieson, who’s being supported by Smiths News PLC this year.
