Smiths News PLC Staff Cycle for Charity

Tuesday 24th September 2013

In September, employees from Smiths News PLC successfully completed a 230 mile bike ride from Paris to Swindon, raising £20,000 for various charities, including the National Autistic Society, Wish Upon a Star and the Oxford Hospital Neonatal Unit.

Earlier this year, 18 employees from across the Group signed up to undertake the challenge as part of the Group’s Community Link-Up programme. The event took place across four days, beginning in Paris on Friday 20 September and finishing at the company’s head office in Swindon the following Monday.

Each member of staff rode in support of their chosen charity, having undertaken months of training in the run up. Starting in Paris, the route took in the French towns of Louviers and La Havre, before cyclists returned to the UK for the final leg of the journey from Portsmouth back to Swindon. The final stretch presented riders with some real challenges, including 4,500ft of hill cycling.

Mark Charlton, Group Communications Director for Smiths News PLC said: “We started these events to give something back to our staff and to charity, but also to give colleagues the opportunity to meet one another from across the entire Group, which spans across all of the UK.

The physical and mental challenge was certainly no easy feat – but everyone pulled together and made it a really enjoyable experience for all involved. We have raised just over £20,000 for our charities, which is fantastic and made the bike ride even more worthwhile. The sense of camaraderie was incredible and I feel very proud to have been a part of it.”

The Paris to Swindon Bike Ride is the third flagship bike ride event to have been arranged in recent years as part of Smiths News PLC’s Community Programme.
