From Source to Sauce Mission Accomplished

Thursday 17th July 2014

On 13 July an employee from Instore Field Marketing completed a 135 mile trip for two local charities, using four modes of transport in the same number of days.

Luke Simons hiked, biked and paddled along the River Severn with two friends, raising over £3500 for Acorn’s Children’s Hospice and St Richard’s Hospice, who provided fantastic care for Luke’s father before he sadly passed away last year.

Luke’s amazing journey started at the river’s ‘source’ in Plynlimon and finished in Worcester city centre, where the famous Worcestershire sauce originates and hence the inspiration for the name of his challenge – ‘Source to Sauce.’

After walking 28 miles on day one, Luke cycled 49 miles and then took to the water in a canoe for the third day, even hitting some white water and almost capsizing.

Luke, a senior account manager for Instore, was inspired to complete the challenge after the support St Richard’s Hospice provided, as Luke explains:

“The hospice allowed us to come to terms with what was going to happen. It may sound trivial, but throughout the darkest time we had dignity, comfort, fun and laughter. These places deserve our support.”

Luke was joined by colleagues, family and friends to complete the final leg of his journey, as they paddled a dragon boat down the River Severn in Worcester, including a very close race. Friends, corporate sponsors and supporters then joined together for a celebration evening at a local riverside location, which included live music and raffle.

“It was a tough 4 days but really rewarding - stunning scenery and we were lucky with the weather. We were genuinely touched by all the support we got, from a great support team to strangers on route who helped us out and even sponsored us.”

Luke has organised numerous charity events in the past including the 3 Peaks 24 hour challenge, both Hadrian’s Wall and Jurassic Coast walks in just over 3 days, and completed the Birmingham to Worcester canal walk in less than 12 hours. In the process he has raised over £20,000 for various charities.
