Volunteers get stuck in to Stickability programme

Thursday 22nd May 2014

Bath Rugby Foundation introduce new literacy programme to local Swindon school, with the help of staff at Connect Group PLC.

Children at Toothill-based junior school Oliver Tomkins enjoyed their last session of ‘Stickability’ on Monday, after 5 weeks on the new literacy scheme.

The programme, run by Bath Rugby Foundation, is based on a fun sticker-reward system and delivered through a combination of classroom-based literacy sessions and active tag rugby sessions. The aim is to give young people aged 9 and 10 the opportunities and support to develop learning skills and confidence, with lifelong impact – and to have fun doing it!

The scheme is sponsored by Trowbridge-based Company The Consortium, and has been running in schools throughout the South West for the last year. The Consortium and Connect Group’s Head Office staff in Swindon have provided around 400 hours of support during the scheme’s first year.

So far, the programme has benefitted around 800 local children, and the impact on their performance has been phenomenal. The children completed a questionnaire before and after the scheme and their attitudes to learning and confidence during the programme increased on average by 5%, with some of the most vulnerable pupils showing increases of up to 40% in that short period.

Vicky Heslop, Bath Rugby Foundation Education Manager, said:

“We are delighted to have proven so far that the programme really works. We have found that it really boosts children’s confidence, particularly for those who start off with the lowest levels of confidence.”

Volunteers from Connect Group Head Office joined Vicky and some of her colleagues, to help deliver the programme at Oliver Tomkins.

Laura Morris, Group Communications Executive, commented:

“I’m so pleased to have been a part of this fantastic programme – it’s clear that the scheme has a positive impact on the children’s learning abilities, as well as their confidence in the classroom. I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the activities too!”
